How TikTok Shop works in Italy: setup, fees and first sales

Eligibility, documents, real review times and the criteria that decide whether it fits your product. Without the part where we tell you it is easy.

The short version

TikTok Shop is a sales channel inside the app: people buy from videos, LIVE streams and the Shop tab without leaving TikTok. Opening one in Italy is free, but it requires a valid document, Italian residency and, for sole traders and companies, an active Business Register entry and a VAT number. Application review takes 2 to 3 business days, then you need a warehouse address, at least one published product and valid bank details before you can sell. Standard EU platform commission is 9%, with a reduced 4% window for a brand's first EU shop if eligible. It works if you have margin, an impulse-friendly price and the ability to produce video consistently. Miss the last one and the rest stops mattering.

What TikTok Shop actually is

TikTok Shop is a sales channel inside the TikTok app, not a separate storefront you send traffic to. It is a buying layer with three entry points that work together:

The real difference against Amazon or Google is where demand comes from. On a search engine you intercept someone already looking for your product. On TikTok the demand does not exist before the video, the content creates it. That is why some categories take off and others never move, regardless of how good the product is. We compared the two models directly in TikTok Shop vs Amazon.

Who can open a TikTok Shop in Italy

Any business legally registered and active in Italy, with a VAT number and a valid identity document, can open a TikTok Shop in Italy. Nobody sells without registering and clearing verification first, and seller onboarding is free, with no signup fee. The baseline requirements to register from Italy:

The business type you pick at registration determines your documents and verification path, and it cannot be changed after approval. Changing it means a fresh application. Italy supports sole trader, individual seller, and private or public company.

One detail that gets expensive. Sole traders are limited to one seller account, and each phone number or email can register only one account. A verified business entity registers once, then opens shops in the other European markets from the same Seller Center (Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Ireland). Picking the wrong entity on day 1 means starting over.

Registration, step by step

Registering a TikTok Shop in Italy takes five steps, and TikTok states a review time of 2 to 3 business days once the application is submitted. Entry point: the official seller registration flow. You sign up with a mobile number, an email or an existing TikTok account. The order of steps depends on business type: corporate sellers start from company data, sole traders from the representative's identity check.

  1. Country and home shop. You select the country where the business is legally registered. That choice determines where full verification happens, which tax and regulatory regime applies, and which shop issues your payments.
  2. Company details. Name exactly as recorded in the Business Register, registration number (a 16 character tax code for sole traders, an 11 digit one for companies, plus incorporation date), VAT number in IT plus 11 digits format, and a legal address identical to the register. Companies also need a complaints address in Italy, an EU legal requirement.
  3. Representative and beneficial owner. The representative can be the legal representative or a delegated user with a signed authorisation letter. You must declare the ultimate beneficial owner, meaning anyone holding 25% or more. In the EU the payment service is provided by Stripe Payments Europe, which checks those details against the national business register for anti money laundering purposes.
  4. Shop name. Up to 40 characters, with no references to TikTok, no contact details or URLs, no comparative claims and no purely generic terms. Changeable once every 30 days, but not during the first 30 days after registration.
  5. Submit and review. Stated review time: 2 to 3 business days. A rejection comes by email with the reasons, and you can reapply.

The documents where applications fail

Three checks: document, face, address. This is where time gets lost, almost always for the same three reasons.

DocumentRequirements
IdentityFront and back, in colour, high quality, PNG or JPG, name identical to the registered account. No black and white, no screenshots, no cropping
Proof of addressIssued within the last 3 months, max 4 MB, JPG/PNG/JPEG/PDF. Utility bills and bank statements qualify, and in Italy so does the municipal residence certificate. Invoices, rent receipts and screenshots do not
Bank statementAn account at an EU based institution, first page complete and unredacted, issued within the last 3 months, account holder identical to the verified name. Companies need a business account

The most common rejection reason for companies is not documentary but typographic: a name, number or address that does not match the Business Register exactly. Capitalisation, abbreviations and punctuation all count. If the register itself is out of date, submit the details as they currently appear and correct them afterwards.

After approval: the three tasks that unlock selling

A TikTok Shop goes live only once three mandatory steps are complete: warehouse address, first published product and valid bank details. Approval on its own does not let you sell.

You also need a linked official TikTok account, one per shop, carrying the same name as the shop. From 1 July 2026 corporate sellers linking or relinking an official account must use an organisation account. If you convert an existing personal account you get a 15 day trial window to cancel, after which the switch is permanent and irreversible. Withdraw any remaining balances first, or the conversion fails.

Commission and fees: what you actually pay

Standard EU platform commission is 9% of completed order value, with a reduced 7% for electronics and some adjacent categories. Brands opening their first ever EU TikTok Shop can get 4% for 60 days in Italy, but only if eligible, and only by completing a mission within 15 days.

The full structure, with eligibility conditions and the maths on real sales volume, is in the dedicated guide: TikTok Shop commissions in the EU. Read it before opening the shop rather than after, because the reduced window cannot be recovered.

On top of platform commission sit affiliate creator commissions, which you set, and logistics. One detail that slips past people at registration: opting into affiliate open collaboration can auto enrol new products at a commission fixed to the midpoint of the suggested category range. It is editable and can be switched off, but it should be a deliberate choice. Campaign auto registration works the same way, where no action within 15 days counts as consent.

Selling with creators: the actual engine

Most TikTok Shop sales volume comes from affiliate creators, not from a brand's own account. You can publish video from your own official account, and you should. But volume on TikTok Shop almost always comes from affiliate creators promoting your products for a commission on the sales they generate. It is a performance model, so you pay on what sells.

Creators in the programme need at least 1,000 followers in their market, must be 18 or over, and must have completed age confirmation. On your side the tools are targeted invitations to selected creators, open collaboration across your catalogue, and product samples. The real bottleneck is not finding willing creators, it is picking the ones whose audience actually buys your category, then giving them a product and an angle that work on video.

Alongside the official account you can link up to 4 marketing accounts, useful for reaching distinct audiences without diluting the main profile.

Probation, and why the first 60 days matter

Every new shop starts in probation, with daily caps on acceptable orders, product uploads and linkable accounts. Graduating requires all of the following together:

CriterionThreshold
Days of active selling≥ 60 days
Completed orders in the period≥ 150
Seller fault cancellation rate (SFCR)< 2.5%
Seller fault return and refund rate (SFRR)< 1.5%
Negative review rate (ONRR)< 1.5%

TikTok's own guides set 10 to 50 orders as a realistic first month. That sits below the graduation threshold, which is normal: probation is typically cleared in the second month. The practical point is that a launch with messy operations stays capped exactly when it should be scaling.

Is it worth it? The honest criteria

TikTok Shop is worth it for brands with enough margin, an impulse-friendly price point and the capacity to publish video consistently. There is no general answer, but there are four filters that decide the outcome in practice. Fail two of them and the answer is no, or not yet.

If you are weighing other channels too, the useful question is not which one wins but what role each one plays. TikTok generates demand. Other channels harvest it.

Where we would start

If we were opening an Italian shop tomorrow, the order would be this: check commission discount eligibility before registering anything, align every field to the Business Register character by character, pick 1 to 5 SKUs with workable margin and price instead of uploading the whole catalogue, and build the content engine before launch rather than after. The slow part is never the registration, it is content and logistics. That is the exact sequence we run in our . FAQ

How does TikTok Shop work in Italy?

TikTok Shop is a sales channel inside the TikTok app. People buy without leaving the app, through three entry points: shoppable videos, LIVE streams and the Shop tab. The difference against a search marketplace is that demand does not exist beforehand. The content creates it.

How do I open a TikTok Shop in Italy?

You need to be at least 18, hold a valid Italian or EU document, be resident in Italy and, for sole traders and companies, have a business registered and active with the Italian Business Register plus a VAT number. You register at seller.tiktok.com, upload ID, proof of address and a bank statement, and review takes 2 to 3 business days. After approval you need a warehouse address, at least one published product and valid bank details.

Does it cost anything to open a TikTok Shop?

No. Seller onboarding is free and there is no signup fee. Costs come later: platform commission on completed orders, affiliate creator commission and logistics.

Is TikTok Shop worth it?

It depends on margin, price point and content capacity. You need enough margin to absorb platform commission, creator commission, returns and logistics, a price that suits impulse buying, and the ability to publish video consistently. Brands that cannot produce content consistently rarely see results, because on TikTok Shop content is the sales channel rather than marketing support for it.

How long does it take to start selling on TikTok Shop?

Application review takes 2 to 3 business days and bank account review takes 1 to 3 business days. On top of that sit catalogue, logistics and content preparation, which vary by brand. TikTok's own guides set 10 to 50 orders as a realistic first month target, and probation is typically cleared in the second month.
